The need for such unification is not new. As early as 1973, cognitive scientist Allen Newell argued that psychology could no longer remain a collection of fragmented, isolated studies of individual phenomena and must strive for unified theories of cognition.123 The same imperative now applies to the entire enterprise of technological innovation. Breakthroughs rarely occur within the confines of a single domain; they emerge at the intersections, where ideas from one field can be applied to solve problems in another. Breaking down data silos is therefore not just an operational efficiency measure; it is a philosophical and strategic necessity, a prerequisite for enabling the "jumping together" of knowledge that consilience describes.
3.2 The Medium: "The Aether" as a Space for Synthesis
If consilience is the goal, what is the medium in which it occurs? This report proposes the metaphor of "the aether" to describe this conceptual space. It enables the convergence of previously siloed data streams, such as integrating genomic, proteomic, and clinical data in biotech 127, or combining materials science, robotics, and AI in aerospace.129 By providing the technological backbone for data integration, AI helps create a data-rich environment where the conceptual work of synthesis can take place.
3.3 The Logic of Discovery: Divergent, Convergent, and Abductive Reasoning
Navigating this conceptual aether requires specific modes of reasoning. The most commonly discussed are divergent and convergent thinking, which form the twin pillars of creative problem-solving.130 Divergent thinking is the process of exploration, generating a wide array of possibilities and ideas without judgment. However, a third, more fundamental mode of reasoning underpins true discovery: abductive reasoning. Coined by the philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, abduction is the "inference to the best explanation".134 Unlike deduction (which moves from a general rule to a specific conclusion) or induction (which moves from specific observations to a general rule), abduction starts with an incomplete or surprising observation and makes a creative leap to the most plausible hypothesis that could explain it.135 It is the logic of what
could possibly be true.138 This is the essence of scientific discovery, medical diagnosis, and creative problem-solving.136
This is where the distinction between human and artificial intelligence becomes most critical. AI systems, particularly LLMs, are powerful inductive engines. They excel at identifying patterns in vast datasets. They can also be programmed to follow deductive rules. However, they struggle with abduction. Their "hypotheses" are sophisticated recombinations of patterns from their training data, not genuine, context-aware inferential leaps into the unknown. The ability to make a plausible guess based on incomplete information, guided by intuition and common sense, remains a profoundly human capability.135
This defines the essential and irreplaceable role of the human innovator in the age of AI. The goal is not to build an AI that can perform abduction, but to design a human-AI system where the AI handles the massive-scale induction (finding all relevant patterns and data) and deduction (checking for consistency), thereby preparing the cognitive ground and freeing the human mind to perform the crucial and uniquely creative act of abduction.
